Tour around Serifos by 4x4

Drive 1: Livadi – Agios Sostis – Platis Gialos

The drive’s starting point is at the east side of Livadi (Avlomonas), where from you shall take the road that leads to the north side of the island. After 1 klm, and before the dam, on your right, there is a dirt road at the start of which you shall see a small sign showing you the direction to the beaches of Agios Sostis with the homonymous small church and of Lia.

On your way back to the central road, a bit further down you shall get to the area called Steno, and on your left there is the dam with the artificial lake. If you keep going, on the right side you shall see the wonderful beaches of Psili Ammos and of Agios Ioannis, where you can get if you take the small road.

From here, after about 8 klm. of driving through the mountainous landscape with the beautiful view, you shall get to the settlement Kentarho or Kallitso, and if you keep driving through the mountainous landscape to the north in a while you shall see the small church of Panagia Scopiani.

After a while, on your right there is a concrete road with a big incline and dirt at its last part, which leads to the beaches of Platys Gialos. Here there is a small tavern where you can enjoy your food or a coffee and relax looking at the Aegean Sea.

Drive 2: Megalo Livadi – Agii Anargyri – Panagia sto Vouno – Avessalos

Leaving Megalo Livadi after 2 klm. you shall see on your left a dirt road which leads to the beach of Avessalos. If you follow it, after 1,5 klm. you shall turn at a branch of the road that leads to the small church of Agii Anargyri at the area Kalavatsaina.

When you get back to the central dirt road after a while you there is a sign leading to Panagia Vouno. The car can go on for about half a kilometer more and then you will have to leave it and take the path to get to the church.

The last part of the dirt road leads to the settlement Avessalos. The settlement is very small with very few houses and there are ruins of ancient smeltings. It has a beautiful beach. It is worth postponing your departure in order to enjoy the sunset here, as it is one of the very few places of the island that face the west. Avessalos is according to our opinion the best fishery of the island.

Drive 3: Megalo Livadi – Cave of the Cyclops

It is a short course which leads to some of the sights of Serifos, which are connected to its mythology and to its history. Leaving Megalo Livadi, a bit after the crossroads to Chora and to Koutalas, on the right there is a dirt road that leads after 4 klm. to the Monastery of Evangelistria Acroteriani.

A bit after the entrance of he dirt road there is the small church of Agia Triada, painted in intense colours, like a jewel on the mountain. From here you can see the women’s monastery of Evangelistria in the background. The monastery is not really interesting however it is worth getting to the end of the way because a bit further down there is Psaropyrgos or the Throne of the Cyclops or Canapes.

It is a new building 9 meters long and 7 meters wide constructed with big slates. At its east side there are "cells" constructed with big rocks. The location offers a wonderful view to the Aegean Sea and to the surrounding area and it is worth delaying your departure in order to enjoy the sunset.

A bit before you arrive to the Monastery of Evangelistria there is a building made of stone, which is one of those buildings that the mine workers used to call "Gyftika" and where they used to manufacture their tools.

Five hundred meters after the monastery of Evangelistria, there is the Cave of the Cyclops, which have been covered in 1893 during some mining works. In a depth of 15 meters, stalactites and stalagmites have been discovered and also some articles, which prove that the cave used to be a place of worship. Unfortunately, today, the cave can not be visited because it has sunk.

Drive 4: Chora – Liomandra – Agia Thekla

Starting from Chora, drive towards the north and at the crossroads take the road to Megalo Livadi and after 2,3klm. follow the dirt road that starts on your right and leads to the north part of the island. The area is called Sclavigianni, cattle-breeding has been developed here, while in the landscape there are vines and dry stone walls that split the slopes.

In the middle of the course you shall see on your left the small church of Agios Ioannis Prodromos and after 1 klm. on your right you shall see the church of Agia Thekla in the background, on a hill, where you can get if you take the path.

If you follow the dirt road, you shall arrive to the small settlement Liomandra with the homonymous church of Panagia. You shall ask for the keys to the church at the first house of the settlement. The church has a large courtyard to welcome the people who arrive for the 4! festivals that are organized here every year. Its interior is also interesting because it is built with huge slabs and joists.
